Mrs. Mary C. Rich

Mrs. Mary Charlotte Rich passed away at her home on Center street in LaHarpe, at 3:45 o'clock, Wednesday morning, February 2, 1921, at the age of 69 years, 2, months and __ days.

Mrs. Rich was a daughter of Henry and Charlotte Ross Hamilton, well known pioneer residents of the LaCrosse neighborhood. She was one of a family of seven children, four sons and three daughters. The passing of Mrs. Rich leaves only two remaining: Alfer F. Hamilton of this city and Mrs. Clara Noble, of Hollywood, California.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1851, near Farmington, Fulton county, Illinois, and when three years of age her parents moved to this locality, ___ting on a farm six and one-half miles southwest of LaHarpe and since that early date she has lived continously in this vicinity, except one year, 1881, spent in Iowa.

On November 28, 1869, she was united in marriage to James C. Rich and for a time resided in LaHarpe, Mr. Rich being in the employ of the ___ and well known firm of Breed and Munger, later moving to the country where they engaged extensively in farming for many years, moving to LaHarpe in August 1904, purchasing from her father the home on Center street where she has since resided. Mr. Rich passed away October 16 [15], 1908 but Mrs. Rich maintained the home where chidren and grand-children [sic] often gathered __ reunion and happy festal days.

Mr. and Mrs. Rich were the parents of eight children, all of whom are living. They are; W. E. Rich, Mrs. Ada Miller, Clarence A. Rich, Mrs. Bertha Butler and Mrs. Clara Butler, all of this vicinity; Mrs. Charlotte Medley, of Prophetstown, Mrs. Mary Bohon, of Quincy, and Mrs. Laura Loomis, of Warsaw. There are also 22 grand-children [sic], and one great-grand-child [sic], Robert C. Miller, son of Harold and Irene Corbitt Miller.

Mrs. Rich has been a member of the Christian Church at LaCrosse once the present building was erected but had become converted previous to that time and has always lived a consistant [sic] christian life, leaving a sweet memory for all who are left to mourn her passing. She will be missed by children and friends ___ all of whom she has ever shown a kind an loving interest.

With the passing of Mrs. Rich another of our early citizens has gone. In her early days she experienced the cares of raising a large family and lived to enjoy the competence she and her husband accumulated, and also to have in her later years the sweet comradeship of children and grand-children [sic] all of whom today call her blessed and graciously remember her unselfish assistance in their early years, training them by precept and example in order that they might be able to nobly meet the duties of life.

Her life was well lived, having faithfully met every obligation imposed with a brave heart, and is deserving of fullest praise.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday. Rev. Wade Smith officiating. Burial in LaHarpe cemetery.
