Vernon was the village radio engineer who installed the Oak Park police radio station WQFL, and perfected two way communication between the station and squad cars, which was rated one of the most efficient communication systems of any American police department. He also was chief engineer of the Association for Police Communications in the Chicago area, which developed a network of forty police broadcast stations affording instant communication between police departments of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa. He served in the Army during World War I.
