John O'Neil was the first of the freed slaves brought to Texas from Georgia by Thomas H Nelms in 1869 to settle in the Fodice Community and set up farms.

John would marry Ann, and they would live to see the Fodice Community grow to have a cotton mill, grist mill, general, store, post office probably one of the citizens that organized a Colored Methodist Episcopal Church that was built in 1885.

School was held in the sanctary of the Church until the school was built in 1900. When he passed away in 1915, The Fodice Community was a prospering and large community.
