William was a Private in the infantry, Company A, 8th Regiment, Maryland, U.S. Army, during the Civil War. He appears to have been one of the many Union soldiers captured by the Confederate forces during the battle near Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 8-18, 1864. He died of scurvy in the infamous, Andersonville Prison in Georgia.
