Nell Kunkle, 95, formerly of Oxford, Ohio, passed away March 13, 2010, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

She was born in Fairview, W.Va., on Nov. 21, 1914, a daughter of the late Steve and Minnie Ammons. At age four, Nell's family moved to a farm in Belle Center, where she and her seven brothers and sisters were raised.

The oldest girl in her family, Nell helped her widowed mother with the child rearing of her four younger siblings. She loved the comfort of the close-knit Belle Center community, and recalled performing plays, movies in the park, picnics, and bonfires as some of her fondest childhood memories.

In high school, Nell's athletic prowess took center stage, where she was a member of the girls basketball team. As a senior in 1933, she led Belle Center to the Logan County championship. A sharp-shooting forward, Nell was the leading scorer in the championship game as well as throughout her senior season.

After graduating from high school, Nell attended Bowling Green State University. The first in her family to attend college, Nell put herself through Bowling Green State University despite the difficult financial times.

While studying to become a teacher, Nell met Frank Kunkle in a psychology class. Following graduation Nell taught and coached basketball at Washington Local School.

Nell and Frank were married at the Ammons family farm in Belle Center in 1941. After teaching in Pettisville and Hicksville, the couple settled in Wauseon, where they raised three children, Frankie, Jim and John. Nell taught elementary school in Wauseon, where they lived for 22 years.

In 1965, the Kunkles moved to Oxford, Ohio, where she taught in the Ross School District.

Upon retirement, Nell, the consummate educator, served another 10 years as a substitute teacher.

She spent many golden years volunteering with senior citizens and participating in Oxford United Methodist Church activities.

After living in Oxford for 44 years, Nell and Frank moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in May 2009, residing at Fox Run Assisted Living, and attended New Horizon Presbyterian Church.

Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kunkle; sister, Mary Ammons; brothers, Floyd, Ed, Virgil and Everett; and great-grandson, Christopher Frandsen.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Miracle of Belle Center; brother, Robert Ammons of Bellefontaine; daughter, Frankie (Cal) Parrott of Council Bluffs; sons, Jim (Patti) Kunkle of Fishers, Ind., and Greeley, Colo., and John (friend Nancy Karnatz) Kunkle of Canton, Mich.; granddaughters, Callie Parrott (Kevin) Bower of Kansas City, Mo., Alisa (Matt) Frandsen of Ames, Iowa, Amanda (Andy) Pals of West Des Moines, Iowa, Molly Parrott of Ames, Amy Kunkle of Roseville, Calif.; grandson, Robert (Jonelle) Kunkle of Greeley; great-grandchildren, Cole, Katie and Luke Bower, Ali and Meredith Frandsen, and Lilliana and Cailean Frank Kunkle; other relatives and many friends.
