Birth: 2nd of five known children in Saline county, Missouri.

According to the Gilbreath family trees found on Ancestry.com, May 2013, it appears Thomas J Gilbreath family migarted from Armagh, Amagh, Northern Ireland in the person of his 2nd great grandfather, Hugh Gilbreath (1750-1813) a veteran of our Revolutionary War who died in Blount county, Tennessee, his son John Fisher Gilbreath (1796-1877), his great grandfather, born Blount county whose son was Tom's grandfather, Samuel Devers Gilbreath (1823-1891) born Tennessee, dying in Barton county, Missouri, his father, L C, possibly (?) a veteran of Civil War (CSA) from Sevier, Tennessee.

Census: 1880, age 4 Saline county, Missouri with parents & sister.

Thomas Jefferson Gilbreath enlisted 1893 in the newly formed Company A, Missouri Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Regiment, which since his birth of 1876, was the most popular created organization, Carthage Light Guards, until 1890 when it became Company A under Capt William King Caffee promoted to Colonel, becoming its Regimental commander in 1894, then Capt Carl Raymond Gray became the company's leader until 1896 when his employer transferred him out of state, he introducing and providing the 'Gray Gold Medal', awarded to be worn by best drilled member every six months; a practice followed the next twenty-two years, until 1916. The medal then hung on the wall at Carthage's Memorial Hall for years, but now found missing. In 1896 Capt John Ard McMillian took command, was in charge for the Spanish-American War where Tom started as a corporal ended as a sergeant. The Second of the Missouri National Guard, volunteered for service in the war, Tom's company A was in camp at Chickamauga, Tennessee. In September the command was transferred to Lexington, Kentucky and in November to Albany, Georgia. March 3, 1899, the regiment was discharged from the service of the United States and resumed its position in the military establishment in Missouri, however due to health reasons Capt McMillian resigned with Capt John Harrison Bailey filling his boots, till around the turn of the century when Lieut Ed Hiatt was placed in charge, promoted to Captain on same military order that Thomas was made First Lieutenant, then Thomas is documented being in charge of said Company A in 1905, while Capt Ed Hiatt was absent from the state for a couple of years. During the early years the Carthage Light Guards was commanded by equally accomplished gentlemen.

WW I Draft Registration: 1918, age 42, Jasper county, Missouri, gives birth date as January 12, 1876 instead of February, married living at 1005 Forest, has blue eyes & gray hair.

Census: 1920, age 43 Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri with wife & four children, at 1005 Forest with wife's parents at 1007 Forrest.

Death: at home, 1123 Forest in Carthage Missouri, Missouri Death Certificate, informant his wife.
