Wingate Man Dies of Polio

Abilene's first poliomyelitis victim of 1948 died Sunday morning at 3:30 o'clock at Hendrick Memorial Hospital following a five day illness.

J. V. MATTHEWS, 21, sophmore at McMurry College and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. MATTHEWS of Wingate, was taken ill near the first of last week and was taken to the Winters Municipal Hospital. His condition grew worse and Friday night he was transferred to Hendrick Hospital and placed in an iron lung.

MATTHEWS was born Sept. 9, 1926, at Rising Star. He graduated from Wingate High School in 1942 and following a two and one-half year cruise in the Navy enrolled in McMurry.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Shep Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin BYRD of Lueders officiating. Burial will be in the Shep Cemetery under the direction of Spill Funeral Home of Winters.

Survivors include the parents; two brothers, W. f. MATTHEWS of Abilene; and one sister, Mrs. Oma Lee KLINE of New Jersey.
