1st Lt. Ephraim Jesse Crain was born on Rosedale Plantation to James Crain II & Eliza Biddle. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in New Orleans, LA on July 2, 1861 and was assigned Commander of the Grosse Tete Creoles, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 15th LA Infantry regulars. Crain's engagements included Mechanicsville, Gaine's Mill, Frazier's Farm, Malvern Hill, Cedar Run, Manassas, Chantilly, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsbury, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Winchester, Gettsburg & Payne's Farm. His service was terminated on March 1, 1865 due to illness. After loosing his farm to burning and ruin by war and exorbitant taxes, he worked as a photographer temporarily. He soon rented a farm in Natchitoches, LA. He later married, Anna Corinne Eggleston, and moved to eastern Texas where he owned and operated various saw mills. Ephraim and his wife, Anna, settled in Liberty to raise their family.
