Samuel Ditzler was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of Melchior & Sarah Engle Ditzler. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Clay Township, Lancaster County. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 26, 1864, with Co. F, 200th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged May 30, 1865.
