From the obituary, published in the Houston Chronicle on Dec. 1, 2009:

"Eddie Cope, the Houston playwright regarded as the grand old man of the little theater scene, died Monday. He was 96. Cope was found in his apartment at a Houston retirement community after a night watchman noticed the door ajar. With a playful sense of humor and fondness for outrageous puns, Cope wrote more than 30 lighthearted comedies, mysteries and melodramas. He was an active member of the Scriptwriters Houston group and prided himself on attending more than 100 productions annually. Ed Cope was the son of a former vaudeville entertainer. He grew up in El Paso and studied journalism and playwriting at the University of Texas. Later he served in North Africa and Italy in World War II. After the war, he moved to Houston and worked in public relations. And, for 17 years he was employed at TV Guide Magazine. Cope was married to Jeannie Cope for 60 years, until her death in 1993."
