Frank Smith was the son of Thomas M Smith and Lucy Browning Smith. He and his first wife Nancy had nine children. After her death he married Nancy Weaver who died about the same time as their daughter Clara. In 1894, he married Sue Fulgham. They were the parents of three children.

Frank owned a farm on the Trinity River, bought and sold cattle, along with being a businessman.
