United States Marine Corps Officer. During the War of 1812 he served with Commodore David D. Porter, and was given command of a captured British ship. While in command he captured another British war vessel, making him the first United States Marine Corps officer to ever do so. He served in the Marines until his retirement at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1834.
