Mary was the daughter of Sadie Croushorn Byers and Henry Ashby Byers. Sadie was the only surviving daughter from my grandfather James Wm. Croushorn's first marriage to Mary Craun who died in childbirth along with their 2nd daughter in 1898. Later in 1904 my grandfather married again to Alice B. Swartz, my grandmother.
On July 6, 1938 Mary Byers wed Ray Collins Owens who preceded her in death on June 16, 1980.
Mary was survived by a son Ray Collins Owens Jr and a daughter Betty J. Oberson; 4 grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren (as of 2005).
Mary and Ray had lived in Maryland and Washington, D.C. for some years but had returned to live at Mt. Sidney near the Lutheran Church (just up the road from it). They built a lovely home there where Mary and Ray lived beginning in 1973, and where she continued to live until 1994. After that health problems forced her to live in various retirement homes, the longest (8 years) at Sunnyside Retirement Community where she died.
Mary was a kind, generous, religious and sensible person. She was always hospitable and wrote caring notes and letters to my mother for years. Especially after both were widows, they seemed to understand one another even more.
Mary kept a wonderful home, loved to grow vegetables and flowers and was active as long as she could be in Bethany United Methodist Church.
