Hazel was the first of seven children born to Edith June Waterman and Thomas Whittaker Greer. She was born on March 11, 1891 in Seneca, La Salle County, IL but grew up in Chase City, Mecklenburg County, VA. Her father was the local grocer (Greer's Grocery) in Chase City and her mother was a homemaker.

In May 1912 Hazel married John Charles Thomas of Seneca, IL, a bank vice president. She had two children, Florence Hull Thomas Habegger of Seneca, IL and Van Nuys, CA and Charles Greer Thomas of Seneca, IL, Temple City and Rescue, CA.

In 1957, Hazel's husband John died and she remarried a widower, William (Bill) McGonigle in 1958 in Van Nuys, CA.

Hazel's daughter Florence moved to Portland to care for her mother after Florence's husband died. After Hazel's death, Bill moved in with his family in Peoria, IL. Bill passed away in October 1980 and is buried in Peoria, IL near his brother James.

Hazel was a gifted seamstress and sewed almost all of her own clothes, including her hats and handbags. She was a devoted member of the local Baptist church in Salem. She was very health conscience and lived to 87, healthy up to her death. She died suddenly of a stroke on June 5, 1978.
