The son of Jonas & Maria (Hensel) Hunter, he married Rebecca E. Kirkwood and fathered Mary Agnes (b. 01/20/56), Anna Laura (b. 12/31/59 - married Elmer Pierce McGurk), Cathryn E. (b. 10/21/61), Harry Curtin (b. 05/15/64), Birdie C. (b. 06/07/71). In 1860 he was a laborer living in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 6' 0" tall with dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-seven at York Furnace, Airville, York County, June 30, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Lancaster's Camp Miller July 2 as a private with Stephens' Independent Militia Company, and honorably discharged with the company July 30, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-eight in York September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. B, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.
