In 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer Cunningham Ramsey in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania. By 1863, he stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Harrisburg June 23, 1863, and mustered into federal service there June 30, 1863, as a private with Co. A in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania). He re-enlisted at Chambersburg February 18, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 19 as a private with Co. A of the three-year organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry, and honorable discharge with his company July 8, 1865.

He married Laura Creswell October 7, 1866, and fathered Emma (b. 02/17/68), Ellie (b. 10/07/71), Clark Amos (b. 02/04/73), Zenas Buchanan (b. 02/05/75), William Lawrence [or vice-versa] (b. 01/01/76 or 77), and Chalmer Henry (b. 06/03/78). In 1890, he was living in Lower Chanceford Township but died at his son Chalmer's home in Missouri. His obituaries all erroneously claim he died at his son Elmer's home in Torku, Missouri, but neither a son by that name nor the location existed.
