George W Bahan was born in Bennington, Bennington, Vermont on
September 18, 1845. Although he was only 16, he joined Company E of
the 4th Vermont Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War. His
unit saw a lot of action, it was in combat 29 times. George was
wounded at Charlestown, West Virginia. George was mustered out on July
13, 1865.

George then spent some time as the Police Chief in Oneonta, New York,
and was a construction foreman for the Denver & Rio Grande RR for
several years. He finally settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1883.
He worked for several years as a paint foreman for J. M. Locke Co. On
February 20, 1889, George was hired by the Minneapolis Police
Department. Also, in that year, he married Laura Crawford of
Bennington. Possibly, he went to Vermont to marry her, because there
is no record of the marriage in Minnesota.

George and Laura moved around near south Minneapolis for several
years. In 1895, Laura opened a confectionary in their home on Fourth
Avenue South. It must have been successful, because the business
lasted until 1904. In the meantime George had been promoted to
Inspector of Police, and spent several years switching back and forth
from Detective to Inspector. George retired in 1912. Laura had died on
July 26, 1909 in Minneapolis. George died on August 28, 1915 in
Minneapolis. Both Laura and George are buried at the Old Bennington
Cemetery in Bennington, Vermont.
