John L. Qualheim, age 96, died peacefully at Luther Hospital on Saturday, March 27, after suffering a stroke on Wednesday, March 24.

He was born at his family's farm near Stanley, WI on October 14, 1913, and was the youngest of Louis and Carrie (Quammen) Qualheim's six children. He attended Garfield Primary School and graduated from Stanley High School in 1930, just as the country entered the Great Depression.

During the Depression, John worked for several area farmers as a hired hand and traveled out west a number of times finding work at various ranches, farms and orchards. During this period he also joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked on projects in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Although his long-term plans did not include farming, he agreed to run the small farm his father purchased in the early 1940s.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, John was drafted into the U.S. Army on September 25, 1942. He said that once he heard the news of the Japanese attack, he knew his farming days were happily over. He served in Europe with the 252nd Ordinance Company until the end of the war. He always referred to his time in the Army as his "first real job."

After the war, he moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. There he made daily visits to the personnel office at U.S. Rubber Company until they hired him. He enjoyed working there for over 32 years before retiring in 1978.

On May 4, 1947, John married Viola Rohlfs at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Together they raised two children, John and Jean, at their home on Davis Avenue, where they lived for over 60 years.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Carrie; and his siblings, Lillian, Albert (Find A Grave Memorial# 80732651), Inga, Imbert and Jean (Memorial# 73375868).

He is survived by his wife, Viola; his son, John (Betty) Qualheim; his daughter, Jean (Buzz) Brown; his grandchildren, Nathan (Brie) Brown and Alex Brown; in-laws, Bud and Twila Walker and Virginia Rohlfs; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

John was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church for over 60 years and served in many ministries. He trusted Jesus for life here and in eternity. He was truly a good person who rarely had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. He was a lifelong friend of many and a wonderful provider and example for his family. The most important thing he ever did was take care of his wife for over 30 years after she suffered a life-changing brain aneurysm.

The family would like to thank Orchard Hills Assisted Living for watching over Dad during his time there, the understanding staff at Luther Hospital who guided Dad through his final days, and Dr. Joanna Setla for her kind and compassionate care.

A celebration of John's life will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, with Pastor Carlton Kangas officiating, on Saturday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m.

Visitation will be held starting at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Northside Lutheran Cemetery.
Smith Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of your choice.
