Joseph was son of "Smokey Jim" James Thompson and Agnes "Nancy Steel. Joseph moved his family to Texas from Alamance Co., N.C. in 1872 and settled in Kaufman County in 1882. He had lost their home in N.C. following the War Between the States. Joseph married in 1855 to Elizabeth 'Bettie' Baldwin, daughter of Sam and Nancy Baldwin. They had 9 children, 5 sons and 4 daughters.
