Heart attack fatal Nov. 20 for Barley, public servant.

Val Taylor Barley, 72, died of a heart attack at his home in Linden Thursday evening, Nov. 20, 1969, at 7:30 o'clock.
Funeral services were held at the Providence Baptist Church Saturday afternoon, Nov. 22, at 3:00 o'clock with the Rev. H.V. Sollie, Doyle Brown and O.D. Boyd conducting the services. All were former pastors of the Providence Church.

The Rev. Mr. Boyd and the Rev. Mr. Brown spoke of the loyal support and faithful attendance of Mr. Barley during their pastorates there. The Rev. Mr. Sollie told feelingly of the 14 years of intimate association with Mr. Barley on the often difficult and trying problems of tax assessments in Marengo County, and how he always practiced the Golden Rule in every day life, "Doing the will of the Father" instead of merely saying, "Lord, Lord."

Music during the services was by Mrs. Melvin Herndon at the organ and Mrs. Maggie Quinney and Billy Tucker vocalist.
Final rites were held at the graveside in the Linden Memorial Cemetery.

The large number of friends from far and near who joined with the bereaved family in paying the last tribute to the dead and the wealth of beautiful floral tributes attested the high regard in which Mr. Barley was held.
He was reared in Linden and spent the greater part of his life here ocasionally being employed in other cities. Some years ago he and Mrs. Barley moved to a new home in the Providence community to be near their children and grandchildren. After several recent heart attacks he moved back to Linden a few months ago to be nearer a physician.
For the past 14 years he had been a member of the Tax Equalization Board of Marengo County. He had also served a term as Mayor of Linden and chief clerk in the Probate Judge and the Tax Assessor office.
He was a Mason and a member of the Linden Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace M. Barley; a son. Kenneth T. Barley of Gallion, two daughters, Mrs. J.D. Huggins and Mrs. Eric Hurt of Gallion; two sisters, Mrs. J.H. Trippe of Linden and Mrs. Frank Taylor of Three Rivers, Texas; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Sam Drinkard, Wilmer Shields, R.J. Westbrook, R.E. Sutton,Sr., Fred Braswell, J.B. Brackin, Willie Gray Little, Elmer Glass, Dick Jones, E.L. McManus and Nathan Levy.
Pallbearers were Jack Quinney, John Aiken, George Watson, Buddy Lawrence, Louis Peaton and J.C. "Coot" Whitcomb.

Holliman Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
