WAVERLY, Ohio-Richard L. Lewis, 77, died June 15, 2002, at Pike Community Hospital in Waverly following an extended illness.
He was born on East First Street in Alexandria on Dec. 18, 1924, to Guy C. and Phala (Castor) Lewis. His father was a former mayor of Alexandria and also a former Madison County Commissioner. In addition. living at the time of his birth were grandparents Melvin and Rose Lewis of Alexandria; John and Myrtle Cassell of the Gilman area; his maternal great- grandparents the Sherman Cassells and great-great-grandparents the John Reeves, all of Alexandria.
He had resided in Bristol Village Retirement Village in Waverly, Ohio, since August 2001. Prior to that he lived for 30 years in Hunterdon County, N.J.
He was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1943.
He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945.
He attended Ball State University and State University of Iowa.
In 1982, he retired from Johns-Manville Corp. after 35 years of employment. During his career, he served in management positions at various locations, including plant manager in Alexandria and Richmond, Ind., and in Waukegan, Ill. He also worked in the corporate headquarters in New York City, N.Y. At the time of his retirement, he was assigned to the Manville, N.J. plant.
He was an adult confirmand of the Wisconson Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zion, Ill., and a former member of Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church in Alexandria. At the time of his passing, his membership was at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Perryville, N.J.
He served on building commitees for three mission congregations and saw the completion of new sanctuaries in those parishes.
He was alwayd active in the Democrative Party and served for several years in the town council of High Bridge, N.J. and Winthrop Harbor, Ill.
Surviving are his wife, Judith (Markle) Lewis, whom he married April 12, 1947; a son, Greg Lewis of Long Beach, Calif.; four daughters, Stephanie (Robert) DeMone of Billerica, Mass., Laurel Lewis of Minneapolis, Minn., Hillary Lewis of Monterey, Calif., and Kimberly Lewis of Phillipsburg, N.J.; his sister, Patricia Esmon of Orange City, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lewis of Anderson; a niece, Sandy Maynard of Fort Wayne; a nephew Alan Lewis of Muncie; and two cousins, Jack Marlow and Judith Willis, both of Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy C. and Phala (Castor) Lewis; and a brother, Paul Lewis.
Friends may call at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and are invited to attend graveside services celebrating his life at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at PArk View Cemetery, Indiana 9 in Alexandria, officiated by Pastor Joseph Stark III of Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church, Alexandria.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be mage to a charity of the donors choice.
