A memorial service was held March 10, at Christian Life Church in Orange Beach for longtime Foley businessman Michael "Mike" David Young, Sr.

Mike died March 2, at Baylor-All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, due to complications from lymphoma cancer.

Mike, 60, was born in Mobile. He owned and operated the family business, Young's Dixie Furniture, with two of his brothers for 30 years. After that, he entered sales.

Mike graduated from Foley High School in 1963, then went to Alabama College (University of Montevallo) where he was a member of the Sigma Club fraternity. It was there that he met his wife, Evelyn. He was interested in the coaching field at that time, according to Ralph Young, Mike's brother.

Mike ended up going to what was then Ingall's Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., where Evelyn's father worked. "He became quite a welder," said Ralph of his brother.

Around 1970, however, Mike came back to the area to Dixie Furniture, a family business that started in 1946.

"Mike was a pillar of Gulf Shores in helping it come back from Hurricane Frederic," Ralph said. He also made a mark in Gulf Shores in other ways. "He was one of the best fishermen on the lagoon," said Ralph, who notes Mike loved softball just as much as fishing. "He was a fierce competitor, and he worked with kids at the high school and helped them," Ralph said.

Mike and Evelyn were instrumental in starting Christian Life Church in Orange Beach. They had moved to Texas a few years ago to be closer to their daughters, Ralph said.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn Aikens Young, formerly of Gulf Shores and now living in Keller, Texas, a son, Michael D. Young, Jr. of Gulf Shores; daughters, Ashley Young (Dr. Danny) Forshee and their children, Hannah Forshee, Bryant Forshee and Leighton Forshee; Ayn-Michele Young (Jay) East, all of Keller and Patricia Young (Neil) Peterson and their children, Hayden Peterson and Landon Peterson of Madison, Miss; his mother Ester Young of Foley and three brothers, Robert W. Young of Pensacola, Fla., Ralph E. Young and Frank W. Young, both of Foley.
