Fred Safko, 82, "the cookie man" of Lake Villa, IL passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at his home.
    He was born January 3, 1918 in Williamson, IL, the son of the late Ferdinand and Matilda (Franzen) Safko. On November 30, 1940 he married Catherine Merkle in Chicago. He had lived in Chicago before moving to Lake Villa in 1960. Fred was a member of St. Bede Church in Ingleside, IL and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family. In 1985 he retired as a route salesman for Pepperidge Farms.
    Survivors include: his daughter, Sandy (Ed) Cibula of Lake Villa, IL; his son, Terry (Mary) Safko of Plainfield, IL; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey (Bud) Barber of Richmond, IL; his sister-in-law, Ann Safko of Glen Ellyn, IL.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, on July 26, 2000; a sister, Marie Brown, and a brother, Leonard Safko.
    Funeral services will Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2000 at St. Bede Church, 36455 N. Wilson Rd., Ingleside. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Antioch.
    Friends may call at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rt. 83) from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Those desiring may make contributions to Provena St. Therese Hospice, Waukegan, IL 60085 in his memory. Information: (847) 395-4000.
