"William P. Higinbotham was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, July 25, 1836, and so was 58 years and two months of age...He came to Kansas at the age of twenty...located a claim and opened a farm...In 1859 he commenced his mercantile career at Manhattan in company with his brothers, Geo. W. and Uriah...He was married June 16, 1860, to Miss Carrie E. Stingley, of Hardy county, Va. Four children blessed the union, and survive to mourn with their mother...They are Mrs. E. L. Scott, of Galveston, Tex., Mrs. C. S. Wolsey, of Chicago, G. A. Higinbotham, of Kansas City, and John U., of Chicago..."
