Milton Varner was the son of Civil War veteran and farmer Andrew Van Buren Varner and Julia Ann Williams. He was educated at Denton Academy, Hall's Chapel Academy, Hodges Business Academy, and Trinity College (which later became Duke University). He joined the church on 16 Sept., 1889. He married Dora Plummer and they became the parents of eight children: Julia Frances, Robert Milton, Roy Van, Clara Mae, John Wesley,Sally Edna, Ruby Eldora, and Mary Lillian.

Milton was a rural mail carrier for three years, taught school for 16 years in both public and private schools, and was a Methodist minister for 30 years. He pastored at Denton, Farmer, Advance, Thomasville, Matthews, Morganton, Thomasville, Troutman, and Concord, North Carolina. He used to say "I married off a child at each appointment". His son Robert followed him into the ministry.
