Obit: Rev. Schuurmans, age 81, passed away June 24, 1981. Rev. Schuurmans had been a resident of the greater Lansing area for the past 50 years. He was a graduate of Hope College, and had taught school at Ithaca High School, and Walter French Junior High School, retiring in 1965 after 34 years of service. He had served as Pastor of both Delta Mills United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church, and Associate Pastor of Christ United Methodist Church. Rev. Schuurmans was a veteran of World War I, and an active member of World War I Barracks #235, and the Miller Road Optimist Club.

Surviving are: 1 son and daughter-in-law, David M. and Carolyn Schuurmans of Lansing; 2 daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Elizabeth Ann) Rose of Milan, MI., and Mrs. Ira (Marylin) Rosenbaum of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; 7 grandchildren; 1 brother, William Verwolf of Washington; 1 sister, Mrs. Julia VanderArk of Grand Rapids, MI.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sat. at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, with World War I Barracks #235 providing their service. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sat. at Christ United Methodist Church, with Rev. Donald Sailor, Rev. Glenn Frye, and Dr. Larry Taylor, District Superintendent, Lansing District of West Michigan Conference officiating.

Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Family Note: Mike's father, Pieter Schuurmans, died when Mike was just 3 years old. His mother, Helen VanderSchaaf Schuurmans married John Verwolf on March 2, 1905 and Mike was raised in the Verwolf home in Amsterdam, Montana. He attended Manhattan High School and worked in the area until he left for Hope College in 1918. In later years he researched and compiled extensive genealogy for the Verwolf family.
