Lorena was born to Alonzo Orlando Sanford (Mar 1865 - 12 Apr 1925) and Elizabeth Dorothy "Libbie" Zeigler (Jun 1872 - 11 Mar 1938). She grew up living in Coldwater, Mississippi, Helena, Arkansas and Meridian, Mississippi. In 1916 she moved to Memphis to live with her sister, Ruby Sanford Cunningham, and met Baxter H. Wallace, who was a 'horseman' for John Levy in Memphis. She and Baxter married on August 9, 1917, in Memphis. Baxter joined the Army and went overseas in 1918 to serve in WWI. She moved back to Helena, AR to be with her family for the birth of her daughter, Evelyne, in January of 1919.

Unfortunately, when Baxter returned from war, their marriage did not last. They were divorced in 1920. She moved in with her Mother and brothers and sisters who were living in Memphis by that time. She worked for Bry's Department Store, and her Mother took care of Evelyne as she worked.

In the early 1930s she met Robert Roy Werkhoven (18 Jul 1902 - 22 Oct 1987) and married him on 01 Jan 1932. They had 53 years of a wonderful marriage, ending only with her death in 1985. She and Robert had no children together, but he became a loving father and grandfather to her daughter Evelyne and Evelyne's two children.

Lorena was a life-long Baptist. She worked in the nursery for many years at Temple Baptist Church and was known as "Miss Werkie." She also did volunteer work for Grace Missionary Fellowship, spending many, many hours cutting quilt scraps for missionaries to sew together as quilts.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
