He was married to Mattie Caroline Hendrix Staggs.
This is the grandfather of Gerald Staggs, who played the fiddle, made walking sticks and ax handles, farmed. He was the father of 12 children.His father was James Naseworth Staggs and Sara Jane Staggs was his mother.
His grandfather Joseph Staggs Jr. died during the civil war, and is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery. He was the grandson of Joseph Staggs Jr. and great-grandson of Joseph Staggs Sr. and Francis (Fanny) Nesbitt Staggs.He was a great fiddle player, and enjoyed raising watermelons.
