For several years he ran the Studebaker dealership in Morganton, North Carolina. His skill with numbers led him to become a deputy collector for the North Carolina State Revenue Service, a post which he held for six years.
He married Mary Nelson Cox, daughter of Xenophon Cox and Lula Nelson. They had two children, Jane Rivers (Mrs. Kenneth Witherspoon) and Judy Ann Spainhour who later married Steve Cooper and lived in Virginia. He was also survived by three brothers and six sisters.
