Miss Rubetta W Biggs was a gifted and inspirational English teacher, first, in several Ohio and Indiana high schools, then finally at Hyde Park High School on Chicago's South Side, from the 1920s until her retirement in 1944. There she influenced a great many of her students--especially young women--to pursue careers in writing and journalism.

Rubetta herself, was a serious student with a thirst for knowledge. She attended Findlay College instead of high school, received both a BA and MA from Ohio Wesleyan University, and a second MA from Radcliffe College.

In addition to her regular teaching duties, Rubetta was faculty sponsor for Senior English Honors Class ("...providing jovial leadership for literary gabfest and grammatical brain-twisting...discussing essays, novels, poetry and authors who produce them."); a service group known as Senior Girls Club, ("Miss Biggs is jolly and spirited ...as well as wise; brimful of ideas and suggestions...making every person part of her time, patience and consideration."); the school paper, Hyde Park Weekly, as well as Scroll, the literary magazine.

Filled with a zest for Life, and with an eye for adventure, she shared all she knew--and then some--with her beloved students. Much later, when former-students' paths crossed, they would name Miss Biggs as the one person who most inspired each of them to realize and pursue their life's passion.

Rubetta never married nor had children of her own.
