Born and raised in Jasper County, Missouri, Elijah married Sarah Jane Blacker on the eve of the Civil war when they were only 18. The Battle of Carthage in 1861 sent them and much of their families to Kansas which had only just achieved Statehood. A settlement was established near Lawrence in Jefferson County. The Union setup an outpost nearby where Elijah enlisted as a Private in the Kansas Cavalry, 11th Regiment, Company D shortly after the birth of his first child, a son George Wilson.

After the war Sarah and he would have 2 more children before migrating back to Jasper County, Missouri in 1875. Unfortunately, dear Sarah didn't survive the trip and Eli was left a widower with 4 children including new born son, Lot Abraham. Once back in Carthage, Elijah had the good fortune to meet and marry Miss Hannah Frances Bradshaw, whom would raise Sarah's children as well as bear Eli another five. A gentleman farmer and later an ordained minister, Elijah performed several marriages for family and friends.

Expiring in 1908, he is buried along with Hannah, here in No Man's Land.

Promoted to Sgt in the Kansas Cavalry, see Elijah Nelson Doughty's Civil War Diary.
