Elmer came to Michigan from Kennett, Missouri to work in the Detroit area and later at Fisher Body and Chevrolet plants before joining the Burton Township organization in 1954. That year he became a volunteer fireman with the fire department in Burton Township part-time for 16 years. In 1970 he was appointed assistant to the chief and in 1976 appointed Chief, where he served for 13 years retiring in 1985. Elmer was preceded in death by his dear wife, Patsy Fern O'Gilvie, they were married June 27, 1950; Son, Jesse Craft; parents, James and Iva Craft.
