A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 10, with Dr. Ralph M. Smith officiating.
Mr. Carrell passed away on April 5, 2010, at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born Sept. 13, 1934, in Memphis, Tenn., to Cleo and Vivian Carrell.
Joe grew up in McKenzie, Tenn., where he graduated from McKenzie High School. He attended Bethel College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in vocal performance and met his wife, Barbara. Joe then attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, where he received his master's degree in church music. He was then called to Tyler in 1958 as the minister of music at First Baptist Church, where he served until 1973. Joe and his family then moved to Austin and served as minister of music at Hyde Park Baptist Church. Retiring in 2004, Joe continued to serve churches in the music ministry and as a consultant to local churches.
Joe was a leader and innovator in church music education and missions, leading more than 40 choir mission tours. He was also a renowned tenor, performing with many respected organizations across the country. After retirement, he continued to serve senior adult communities through pastoral care and education.
Joe was a loving husband, father and grandfather who adored his family. He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 53 years, Barbara Conner Carrell of Tyler; sons, John Timothy Carrell of Lufkin, Stephen Thomas Carrell and wife Jamilyn of San Antonio, and Daniel Ethan Carrell and wife Michele of Tyler; brother, Kenny Carrell and wife Jane; and sister, Jeanette Johnson, all of McKenzie; and grandchildren, Sarah Anne Carrell, Rebecca Ashlyn Carrell, Rachel Elizabeth Carrell, Amanda Michele Carrell, Matthew Conner Carrell and Ethan Thomas Carrell.
