Together, they had about 22 children. Eighteen died either in childhood or at birth. Four survived to adulthood.

Nathan was one of the Superintendents of Construction on the Great Mormon Temple in Utah, as well as a gifted cabinet maker and champion checkers player. He also worked on the dangerous Railroad as a Brakeman where he stood on top of the moving wooden cars to turn the brake handles.
