She was the daughter of Michael Barton & Margaret Sullivan Barton of Kentucky; and married Patrick Hamil Clarke 24 June 1873 in Frankfort, KY. After her husband was established in the blacksmithing trade, they moved to St. Louis, 1879.

In 1904, at the time of the World's Fair, her husband became the sheriff of St. Louis county, guaranteeing an exciting time for the family.
