John Chub Owens, 80, of 1517 Ohio Street, died Wednesday at his home.
He was born August 24, 1922, in Loudon County, Va., a son of John Jefferson and Mildred Helmintoller Owens.
He was an active member of Mountaintop Christian Church, Disciple of Christ, in Love, Va.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart, and had retired after 34 years with the Civil Service.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie Owens; five sons,Frank Brewer, Steve Owens, Rob Kendrick, Jeff Owens, Tim Owens, and their families; three daughters, Melony Carter, Jacqueline Cain, Susie Givens, and their families; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, James Owens of Kansas; five sisters, Ruth Paulette of Charlotessville, Mary Witt and Margaret Dean of Covington, and Polly Latham and Betty Cummings of Waynesboro; and a number of wonderful friends and neighbors.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mountain Top Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Michael G. Waters.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at McDow Funeral Home.
