BRUCE CRAIG CIGAN
Born: July 19, 1947
Died: January 6, 2007 (age 59)

Bruce Craig Cigan, long time Fresno resident, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2007, at the age of 59. He died of complications from dementia. From it's onset, the disease lasted 12 years. Bruce was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 19, 1947. Bruce, the youngest of three sons born to Betty Yont of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Steve Cigan of Czechoslovakia, grew up in Santa Clara County. He graduated from Willow Glen High School in San Jose, class of 1966.

In August, 1968, Bruce enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam, as a military policeman. While there, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. In September, 1969, he was transferred to Fort Ord, California, eventually relocating to Fresno in early 1970. He then met the love of his life, JoAnn Marie Damiani, and decided to make Fresno his home. Bruce was honorably discharged in December, 1972.

After a three year courtship, Bruce and JoAnn married on November 24, 1973, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, of Fresno. A dinner dance reception followed the ceremony at the Hacienda Hotel, also of Fresno. In 1974, Bruce graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Arts, from California State University, Fresno. In addition, he began putting his creative and hardworking talents to use by acquiring a general building contractor's license, issued to Cigan Construction Company. He then designed and built the home he and his wife moved into in 1974, after only one year of marriage. Bruce and JoAnn had one child, a son, Joel Craig Cigan, born May 21, 1977. The three of them were a very close-knit family.

Being an avid landscaper and loving the outdoors, Bruce also established his own landscaping company in 1986, Sierra Landscapes and Maintenance, concentrating on both residential and commercial landscape design, construction, and maintenance. Concurrently, Bruce maintained a career with P.G.& E. for 20 years, ending his career there as an Industrial Power Engineer.

Other hobbies enjoyed by Bruce included: designing and fabricating fine furniture; attending FSU football and basketball games; tailgating before, during, and after the games; traveling both domestically and abroad; taking yearly vacations to the beach; entertaining and dining out with family and friends; and lastly, but most importantly, spending time with his son, Joel Craig Cigan.

Becoming involved with Joel's school activities came naturally to Bruce. He coached Joel's first soccer team; served as camp counselor for Joel's elementary school week-long camping trips; acted as a personal trainer and coach for whatever sport Joel was involved; and of course became a mover, helping Joel relocate to Davis for College, and Stockton for Pharmacy School. Bruce was EVERYTHING to Joel!

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, JoAnn Marie Damiani Cigan, and his son, Joel Craig Cigan, both of Fresno. Also surviving are his mother, Betty J. Yont Cigan of Marina, California; his brother, Jeffrey Lee Cigan of Santa Cruz, California; brother and his wife Dennis Paul and Judith Ann Cigan, of Gilroy, California; nephew and his wife and family, Paul Christopher and Terri Cigan, and children Claudia Hazel Cigan, and Madeleine Renee Cigan all of Springfield, Virginia; niece and her husband, Claire Elizabeth and Philip Richard Thome; and niece and her husband Ann Michelle and Mark Stephen Fitzsimmons, of Gilroy. In addition, Bruce is survived by brother-in-law, Edward L. Fanucchi; nephew and his wife and family, Edward Darrel and Mariangela "Mimi" Fanucchi, and children, Luca Antonio and Maria Sofia Fanucchi; sister-in-law and her husband, Lillian Marie and Harvey Allen Armas; and nephew and his wife, Joseph Todd and Janene Armas, and their daughter Lilianna Marie Armas, all of Fresno.

Bruce was preceded in death by his father, Capt Steve Cigan (1921 - 1995) mother-in-law and father-in-law, Isabell T. Mastro Damiani (1917 - 1998) and Joseph Logoluso Damiani (1909 - 1987); and sister-in-law, Lucille Ann Damiani Fanucchi (1940 - 1990).

A private Viewing was held at Farewell Funeral Services, and recitation of the Holy Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial were also held privately at St. Peter's Cemetery in Fresno.

Bruce was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, son-in-law, uncle, great uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace!
Remembrances may be sent to St. Anthony of Padua, 5770 N. Maroa Ave., Fresno, CA 93704.
