Son of Henry Cave (1769-1847)
and Margaret Hawkins (1775-1849)

Benjamin was named for his great-grandfather (1703-1769) who was born in Windsor, England and by 1731 had emigrated where he is shown to be a vestryman of St. Mark's Parish in Spotsylvania County, VA. It was there that the ggrandfather married Hannah Bledsoe (1699-1769) and thus began a family that in the year 2000 still considered itself a unit.

Benjamin's father was a member of the Smithton Company, formed in Georgetown, KY for the organized settlement of Columbia, Missouri. The plan was a highly successful one. Citizens of early Columbia were well educated and moneyed & Columbia offered a way of life that other towns could not aspire to, try as they might. Records show that Henry Cave was in the forefront of this group. When Benjamin was 14 his father entered his original claim to Sec 6, Twp 48, Rge 12 in Boone county, which was the family farm. A fine home of stone was built by slaves on the property. At Henry's death it became the home of Benjamin's brother, Maj. William Sallee Cave who lived there until 1843. The Cave Family Cemetery is located on this property, reached by traveling north from Columbia on Old Hwy 63 (info provided by Anna Jaech).

Benjamin married Jane Turner. They are buried in the family cemetery as are his siblings:
Henry Cave (1800-1858) m. Frances Cleveland Craig
Nancy Cave (1801-1827)
Frances Cave (1802-1829)
William Sallee Cave (1812-1864) m. Margaret Harrison
Hawkins Cave (1814-1835)
