James Ethridge first shows in the 1880 census:

1880 census, Speedwell Twp., St. Clair, MO: Ethridge, T., age 35, Farmer, born in KY, f-KY, m-blank; wife- Hester, age 27, born in MO, f-MO, m-blank; son- B. Franklin, age 6, born in MO; dau- Iennie, age 4, born in MO; son- John, age 2, born in MO

Note: James is listed as "John" in the enumeration. I am unsure if this is indicative of a middle name, or if it is a mistake. His death certificate and headstone do not list any other name. When he signed his son, Elton's death certificate, he appears to have signed it as "J. B. G. Ethridge". The 1880 enumeration contains a mistake on his mother's name, as she was enumerated as "Hester", when her name was actually Jo Hannah, and she was known as "Hannah".

By November 1887, James had made the move to Oregon, along with the other Ethridge extended family members, where his father homesteaded. By 1900, however, the family was back in Missouri, now living in the Taberville area.

1900 census, Speedwell Twp., St. Clair, MO: Ethridge, Thomas, head, born Oct. 1844, age 55, married 28 yrs., Farmer, owns farm, no mortgage, born in TN, f-Unknown, m-Unknown; wife- Hannah, born Aug. 1851, age 48, married 28 yrs., 5 children born, 5 children living, born in MO, f-NY, m-VA; son- Benjamin F., born Mar. 1874, age 26, single, farmer, born in MO, f-TN, m-MO; son- James, born Apr. 1878, age 22, single, born in MO, f-TN, m-MO; dau- Effie, born July 1882, age 17, single, born in MO, f-TN, m-MO; dau- Bessie, born Feb. 1885, age 15, single, born in MO, f-TN, m-MO

On Aug. 25, 1908, James married Ethel Stewart in Nevada, Vernon Co.,MO.

1910 census, W. Speedwell Twp., St. Clair, MO: Ethridge, Thomas J., head, age 65, farmer/general farm, owns farm, no mortgage, married 1x- 36 yrs., born in KY, f-NC, m-SC; wife, Hannah, age 56, married 1x-36 yrs., 5 children born, 5 children living, born in MO, f-NY, m-VA;

(next household)- Ethridge, James, head, age 31, farmer/general farm, rents, married 1x-1 yr., born in MO, f-KY, m-MO; wife- Ethel T., age 23, married 1x-1 yr., 1 child born, 1 child living, born in KS, f-IL, m-PA; dau- La Ura A., age 2/12, born in MO, f- MO, m-KS

On May 8, 1916, Ethel gave birth to either twins or triplets, all boys. Sadly, none of them survived. Death certificates were generated on two of them: Elmo and Elton. Elmo lived only one day, and Elton lived for six days. Their headstone, however, reads "The Three Infant Sons of James & Ethel Ethridge", indicating a third son was lost. As of this writing, it is not known if the third son was a separate birth, or a triplet to Elmo and Elton.

In September 1918, James was registered for the WWI Draft. He was shown as farming in Schell City, St. Clair Co., while actually residing in Schell City, Vernon Co.

1920 census, Speedwell Twp., St. Clair, MO: Ethriedge, James, head, owns home, mortgaged, age 41, farmer/general farm, born in MO, f-TN, m-MO; wife- Ethel T., age 33, born in KS, f-IL, m-PA; dau- La-Ura, age 9, born in MO, f-MO, m-KS

1930 census, Speedwell Twp., St. Clair, MO: Ethredge, James, owns home, age 52, age 30 when 1st married, farmer/general farm, born in MO, f-KY, m-MO; wife- Ethel, age 44, age 22 when 1st married, born in IL, f-IL, m-PA; dau- La-Ura, age 20, single, school teacher/rural or normal (?---unclear), born in MO, f-MO, m-IL

A search for an obituary was made by the Missouri State Historical Society, but none was located.
They searched all of the Dallas County and St. Clair County newspapers for 1955, specifically the Appleton City Journal, the Osceola St. Clair County Courier, the Buffalo Dallas County Republican, and the Buffalo Reflex for the month following his death.

Likewise, I contacted the funeral home who handled his burial to see if they might have one in their file. They did not, but they sent me a copy of his funeral record. On it, there is a space for itemized charges for Death Notices and a place to list the newspaper name(s). That item was left blank, so it may well be that no obituary ever existed.
