Chimborazo Hospital
We have been requested to say to the ladies, who have done much for this hospital, that they will render the most essential service to those of its suffering inmates that are wounded, by supplying rags for bandages of different kinds, poultices, &c. It will also conduce to a good end if worn out cotton garments are sent to the stewards of the different hospitals to be used in applying mustard plasters. Many of the depots of the sick are but scantily supplied with such articles. We are sure that the ladies will do all in their power to keep our soldiers from suffering.

James Wesley Merritt was convicted of killing his wife's cousin, Joel F. Brown, who appears elsewhere in this record. He was received at the prison in Huntsville, TX, on 12 Apr 1899 to serve a four year sentence. He was #17719. He was pardoned on 21 Jul 1901.

Helen Brooks stated that James went to school in Selma, AL. She also said that he lived in Freestone Co., TX, for four years before coming to Palo Pinto Co. [home place in Parker Co.].

John Wesley Merritt stated that James moved from Jones Co., GA, in 1866, first stopping near Texarkana. From there he went to Rockwall, Tarrant and Bell counties. He then settled in Palo Pinto County in 1872. Because of Indian raids he moved back to Bell County and then returned to Rock Creek on the Palo Pinto/Parker County line in 1876.
