Barbara C. (Warner) Maslen, 82 of Yarmouthport, Mass., an ardent gardener and environmentalist, died Thursday April 8, 2010 at Rosewood Manor in Harwich, Mass., from com-plications of Parkinson's disease. She was the wife of the late John J. Maslen, who died in 2003. They had been married for 51 years. Born in Greenwich, Mrs. Maslen was the daughter of the late Norman G. and Adelaide S. (Milne) Warner. She was raised and educated in Rye, NY where she attended Rye Country Day School. Her early family life revolved around sailing. Mrs. Maslen was a 1949 graduate of Wellesley College with a BA in Botany. She then went on to earn a BS in Landscape Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1951. The Maslens raised their family in Connecticut, where Jack established John J. Maslen Advertising in Stratford, and Barbara worked in Fairfield County as one of the few woman landscape architects of that time. She was an early advocate of environmentalism, and served on the Inland Wetlands Commission and Conservation Commissions in both Stratford and Trumbull. Moving to Yarmouthport in 1985, Barbara became active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable, MA. She greatly enjoyed gardening, golf, Jazz music, swimming, knitting and quilting. Barbara is survived by two daughters, Judith Maslen, an accountant, of Yarmouthport and Barbara Maslen, an artist, of Sag Harbor, NY; two beloved sisters, Fran Whitney and her husband, Edward of Yarmouthport and Adelaide Minott and her husband, Addison of Putney, Vt.; and seven nieces and nephews. The family wishes to especially acknowledge the staff of Rosewood Manor, whose grace, affection and skills made the last part of her life a special and good time for her. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday April 12 in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Barnstable. Interment will follow in Lothrop Hill Cemetery, Barnstable. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday April 11 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth. At the family request, memorial donations may be made to the environmental preservation organization of one's choice; to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 395, Barnstable, MA 02360 or to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue / Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136-1494. Arrangements by Hallett Funeral Home, South Yarmouth.
