"Marshall County News", Marysville, Kansas, Saturday, September 20, 1870:
"John R. Harris was born in Washington county, Penn., in '20 and came to Kansas in '65. He pre-empted 160 acres on Irish creek, and has 65 acres of the same under cultivation, 35 acres corn, a small orchard of apple and peach trees, also a few cattle and hogs."

"Strong City Derrick", 21 July 1892:
"Mustered Out. Toledo, Kas., March 5, 1892.
This community is called upon to mourn the loss of one of her best citizens in the person of John Harris, who died of a complication of diseases on February 29, 1892. He had been afflicted for more than a year and a week before the end he began to sink rapidly until death came to his relief.
The subject of this sketch was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, on the 4th of January, 1820. While yet young he moved with his parents to Ohio county, Virginia, where he remained until his marriage to Susanna Elafret, when they emigrated to Hancock county, Illinois. He came to Kansas in an early time and located in Marshal county in 1855. Here he made a home and lived until 1883, when he moved to Toledo township, Chase county, where he has since resided. He leaves four sons to mourn his loss, his wife, two sons and two daugters having preceeded him. He was a member of Company G, 18 Kansas, Voluteer Infantry, and Inter of C. C. Myser post 148, G. A. R. Thus one more veteran has answered the last roll call and been mustered into the ranks of the grand army above."
---------------------
John's parents have not been proven. One suggestion was his mother was Ann Chidester. However, this has been proven NOT to be true. A will was found for a Martha Harris of Amwell Twp., Washington Co., PA. It is dated 1838 and recorded 4 May 1841 and mentions her "late" husband, Joseph; 2 daus, Sarah & Julian; and son, JOHN "who furnished the funds for the purchase of the said two shares". I found no further data to connect her to this John R. Harris. (Glenda Eisenhour)
