from THE DAILY TULARE REGISTER, Thursday August 5, 1920:

OCTOGENARIAN WAS DOUGHBOYS' FRIEND

Mrs. Mary Wilbur, who died at the age of 85 years yesterday, despite her advanced age, worked unceasingly and indefatigably for the soldiers during the world war. Mrs. Wilbur made eight sweaters and many pairs of socks for the service men and expressed the regret that she could not do more.

Mrs. Mary Wilbur, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson was born in Scotland, September 15, 1836, the youngest and only survivor of twelve children. She came to America with her parents and family in 1851 settling in New York State.

In 1854 she was married to William S. Wilbur of Dunkirk, N.Y. Two children were born of this union, Mrs. Nellie La Monte and W. H. Wilbur, both of Tulare and with whom she has made her home for the past 35 years.

Mrs. Wilbur has been a resident of California almost continuously for more than 45 years. For more than 20 years she resided in Oakland with a few years residence in Oregon. For the past 18 years she had been a resident of Tulare, making her home with her son W. H. Wilbur of the Buena Vista district.

Mrs. Wilbur has been a lifelong Christian of beautiful character and a member of the Methodist church for over 50 ears. Her religion was expressed in loving words and kindly deeds. In every community in which she lived she was known as "Mother Wilbur," because of the many ministrations of service which she performed for rich and poor alike.

Her husband, William S. Wilbur, who was a veteran of the Civil War, died 38 years ago.

Mrs. Wilbur was never ill and her last days simply marked the coming to an end of a life that had been full of service for others.

She passed away at the home of her son, W. H. Wibur, Wednesday, August 4, 1920.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church Friday at 10 a.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. R. Montague.
