Death of a former resident of Downs (McLean Co., Illinois) at his home in Lovington, Il. Samuel Brightman died in Lovington, Il. 8/29/1896, aged 69 years, less 10 days. He was born in Bedfordshire, England 9/8/1827 & came to America with his parents in 1830 & settled near Albany, N.Y. In 1853 he came to McLean County & settled in Downs Twp. He united with the United Brethren Church of which he remained a faithful member until his death. In 1851 he was marred to Miss Polly Hase & to them was a son, Alfred H., 7/1/1853. His wife died in October of the same year. On 12/13/1854, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Calhoun & to them were born six children: Sarah E., Abraham L., Ada A., Mary E., Ira E., & Ella B. Those who survive him are: Alfred H., of Decatur; Ira E., of Iowa; Ada A. Clark of Lovington & Ella B. Kale, of Oldenburg & the widow. He died after eight months suffering from injuries received from being thrown from a street car in Decatur, 12/21/1895. His suffering was intense & he longed to die. The funeral services were held in NORTH FORK CHURCH, near Decatur, on Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. L. Field of Decatur.
