John H. Cornwell, age 70, former County Tax Assesor and widely known and highly esteemed citizen of Putnam County, died Friday night, at his home on East Spring Street following an illness of several weeks.

For the past several years, he had held a position in the State Highway Department office in this city. Several years ago, he served for eight years as Assistant Superintendent of the State Training and Agricultural School for Boys. He was a native of Smith County, but in his boyhood he moved to Algood, this county, where he resided until 28 years ago, when he moved to Cookeville.

He served for several years as Secretary of the Democratic Executive Committee of Putnam County, and had been a member of the County Primary Election Board for many years. He was a Steward and active member of the First Methodist Church of this city.

Mr. Cornwell was for 30 years an oil distributor in this section, and is believed to have been the first
distributor in Putnam County.

In his young manhood, he married Miss Dora Jared, of this county, who survives him. He is also survived by two sons and a daughter, Former County Representative D. B. "Pat" Cornwell, Mrs. Henry T. Pointer and Mrs. Cornelia Ballard, of Algood, and Mrs. R. L. Campbell, of Donelson, TN.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, at the First Methodist Church, by the pastor, Rev. H. T. Fowler. Burial was in the Cookeville cemetery.

He died from a cerebral hemorrhage due tocarcinoma of the stomach.
