Anderson, Claude R. "Andy"
Dec. 13, 1936 - Sept. 18, 2008
Andy Anderson peacefully died at home after years of struggle with diabetes and cancer. He was a dedicated family man who loved life, and fought not to lose it. Other than his great love for his family and flying, he was an enthusiastic reader, computer tech, bridge player, and loved the San Francisco Giants.
He was born in Shreveport, La., the youngest of seven boys. At the age of 3, he and his brothers, were taken to live in an orphanage as their mother was tragically killed. The rest of his childhood was spent with his foster mother, Mrs. Warden, who cared for the boys like her own.
He graduated from Fair Park High School in Shreveport, earned a bachelor of science degree from Louisiana State University in 1959, and entered the Air Force to become a pilot. He was stationed in Barstow, Fla., for basic pilot training and in Laredo, Texas, to earn his wings. Subsequently, he was stationed at Biggs AFB, Texas; Rockville, Ind.; and McClellan AFB in Sacramento. Having served six years in the Air Force, he got out and flew for Air America in Vietnam. During that time he was married to his wife, Barbara, and together they moved to Vietnam.
After a tour of Europe, they returned to California, and he became a six-grade teacher in Woodland. During this time, he also re-enlisted in the Air Force Reserves. While working two jobs, he found time to teach local residents how to fly his Cessna, earned a master's degree and have two children: Karin and Adam.
After teaching children for 28 years, he retired in 1992, and from the Air Force Reserves in 1987. He retired as a lieutenant colonel and commander of his flying squadron with a little more than 16,000 flying hours.
Andy could fix anything, and would help anyone if needed. He volunteered at the Travis Air Force Pharmacy up until the week before he passed away, and was great supporter of people in the military. For the past three years, he managed the Holy Rosary Church radio station, and took great interest in Catholic programming.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Barbara; his two children, Karin DeVarennes (Dan), and Adam (Lori); five grandchildren, Jacob, Abby, Aaron, Christopher and Evan. He is also survived by two brothers, Jack (Sally), and Dalton (Ebba); mother-in-law, Maria Alonso; and many nephews an nieces.
The Anderson family would like to thank the many wonderful family and friends who have offered their prayers and support these past years. Every gesture and act of kindness was appreciated.
A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Community Care Car or the Holy Rosary Parish Building Fund.
