Lizzie was the first wife of Senator Daniel Sheldon Norton, a maverick Republican senator who tended to vote with the Democrats on matters of national policy. During
the impeachment and trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868, the Minnesota legislature directed Norton to vote for Johnson's removal but Norton was one of eight Republicans who broke ranks with the party and voted against conviction. Johnson remained in office by a single vote. Norton died in office two years later.
