NOBLE, CAROLIE WOODS

NOBLE--Carolie Woods, 81, died peacefully at her home in Mystic, CT on November 12, 2008. Mrs. Noble was the daughter of Colonel Arthur H. Woods and Lt. Colonel Helen H. Woods. Her beloved husband Marshall Hays Noble predeceased her in 2002. An accomplished artist and sculptor, Mrs. Noble graduated from Scripps College in 1947 and did graduate work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She recently completed a bronze head of her son, Valentine Hollingsworth III. Mrs. Noble was the sponsor of the submarine U.S.S. Alexander Hamilton, which was launched on August 18, 1962. This connection to the submarine service and her strong belief in the value of a college education led her, with her first husband Valentine Hollingsworth, Jr., to establish The Thresher Fund in 1963 to provide educational scholarships for the children of the submarines who perished on the U.S.S. Thresher in April of that year. She is survived by her brother, John P. Woods, of South Harpswell, ME, five children, Tracy Hollingsworth of Alexandria, VA, Helen Hollingsworth of Wayland, MA, Valentine Hollingsworth III of Dover, MA, Laura Hollingsworth of Farmington, CT, and Arthur Hollingsworth of Dallas, TX, their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the proud grandmother of fourteen grandchildren. Services will be held Monday, November 24, 11:00am, at the Calvary Church, 27 Church St., Stonington, CT.
