PONTIAC, Mich. — George Carney, 85, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at his residence. He was retired from General Motors after 40 years of service, including many years as president of UAW Local 596 and Local 5960. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He enjoyed brotherhood at the Roosevelt Masonic Lodge 510, where he was a past master.

He was preceded in death by son, Jerry L. Carney; parents, William H. and Nora East Carney; three sisters, Edna, Una and Amy; five brothers, Roy, Wayne, William Jr., Jack and Alfred; and dear friend, John Page.

He is survived by his beloved and caring wife, Evalena Carney; grandsons, Jonathan M. (Christine) Carney, George Bryan (Nickie) Carney; daughter-in-law, Peggy Carney-Wall; beloved great-grandchildren, Chaz, Breanna, Abigail, Corbin, Jerry Michael and Lillian; brother, Brownie (Faye) Carney; many sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at the Pontiac Chapel of Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home. Interment was in Christian Memorial Cemetery. Visitation was held 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.
