S. M. Todd died in Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday, the 23rd, at the age of 88
years. Mr. Todd, with his two sons, Tom and Charles, were the first white
settlers to locate in Todd Township, which township was named in honor of the
family. Mr. Todd located here {Park Rapids, MN} in 1879, and until five years
ago was a resident of this locality. At that time he went west to make his home
with his son Charles, and was there at the time of his death.

S. M. Todd was born in New York, in 1856 he moved to Iowa. When the war broke
out he enlisted in the 6th Iowa Calvary, and served three years and three months
with that regiment. He was a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post, and took an
active part of that organization as long as he was able to do so. During the
last years he lived here his eyesight was very bad and he walked about town with
some difficulty. For the past two years he was totally blind.

The old log cabin, which has occupied so conspicuous a place in the roadway in
the townsite has been removed. It was the first building put up on second
prairie. Mr. Charley Todd came here in June 1879 and built it. For five weeks he
and his family did not see a white man. Little did he think a growing village
would be here.
The cabin was taken down last week.
